The Roots of our Plants

Gardeners know the rule: if a plant is struggling, the problem is usually underground and out of sight. Poor roots, poor soil, or poor nutrition result in poor, unproductive plants! Many supermarket plants look great on the shelf but collapse in real gardens because they were raised in perfect, artificial conditions in vast, overseas greenhouses.

Our plants are different. Grown by us or trusted partner growers, they’re nurtured with near‑obsessive care for root strength. That’s why they thrive in Chiltern soil and keep giving year after year. We specialise in hardy perennials and alpines built for real gardens, real seasons, real life.

The Roots of the Children we Serve

Munsieville—South Africa’s oldest township—was built on exclusion, and for many who live there, the struggle hasn’t eased. Poverty, hunger, stigma and fear still cling to daily life, fuelling violence, addiction and despair.

But we also see light breaking in. Stories of children stepping out of darkness. Green shoots pushing through dry soil. When faith, hope and love are nurtured, strong roots form—and lives begin to flourish.

Everything we do with children, young people and their caregivers is about growing those roots deep and strong. Because we believe the day is coming when the beauty and fruit of this community will bring fresh hope across Africa and beyond.

Personal Roots

A personal story from Paul Brooks, co‑founder of Root & Branch Change

I’m not trying to make myself look good — far from it. I just want to share why I believe that strong roots matter, and why mine had to be anchored in something far more solid than my own self‑reliance.

People often ask about my religious convictions, especially because Root & Branch Change is a faith‑based charity. I usually say, “I’m a follower of Jesus Christ — and not a particularly good one.” That’s not false humility. It’s simply true. I’ve made more mistakes than I can count and failed to live up to even my own low standards.

But here’s the thing: Although I’ve failed Jesus again and again… he has never failed me. Not once. That’s why, despite my own stubbornness, I’ve chosen to sink my roots into him.

And that decision changes everything. Roots in Christ draw up love, forgiveness, hope, correction, joy — and a deep desire to share that life with a world convinced that strength comes from standing alone.

As St Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here.”
(2 Corinthians 5: 17)

HEALTHY ROOTS MATTER

Our name says it all. Root & Branch Change exists because strong, well‑formed roots are the only way to grow lasting beauty and real fruit. That truth shapes everything we do — from our volunteer‑run nursery in the Chiltern Hills to our work restoring fractured lives and communities in South Africa, and even in our own daily choices.

Join our volunteer team

Volunteer opportunities are available now to help create a therapeutic community garden and to grow gorgeous garden plants to be sold to raise funds for vulnerable children locally and in Africa. Openings every Tuesday, Friday, and last Saturday in Spring and Summer. No experience needed.
